Guest editorial: A dust explosion mitigation approach for the future: numerical modeling
Industry uses both preventive and mitigatory measures for fighting dust explosion hazards. In this column, I'll concentrate on some perspectives for longer-term research on and development of mitigatory measures.
In my view, there's a considerable potential for improving the cost-effectiveness of mitigatory measures such as sizing dust explosion vents for process units; sizing venting arrangements for rooms with a risk of secondary dust explosions; designing dust explosion suppression systems for process units; and designing isolation systems for preventing an initial dust explosion in one process unit from propagating into other enclosures measures. I wish to use this opportunity to highlight the type of longer-term research and development that I think will be needed to exploit this potential. I know very well that industry needs solutions that are available more or less immediately. However, this unavoidable short-term pragmatism must not block a parallel strong striving for better long-term solutions.
